Reflections of Gauguin is an investigative, character-driven documentary directed by Anssi Rimpelä and Heidi Richert, currently filming across seven European countries: Finland, Slovenia, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Monaco, and France.
The film is produced by Johanna Poikelainen, with Salla Kozma of Pig & Horse Productions serving as Executive Producer. International sales are handled by Norse Key Distribution, led by Maria Kivinen.
At the heart of the film is a decades-long search for truth surrounding a mysterious painting bearing the signature “P. Gauguin.” The work has shaped the life of Italian philanthropist Stefano Canepa for nearly twenty years. While scientific analysis suggests that the pigments and techniques align with Gauguin’s era, unresolved gaps in provenance have kept the painting outside the official Catalogue Raisonné.
Reflections of Gauguin unfolds as a cinematic thriller grounded in real-world events, where crime, art, and philosophy intersect. More than a film about authentication, it explores corruption, power, and the very human stakes behind the pursuit of truth.
